Current Executive Committee
Chairperson: Rotating Chair
Secretary: Dr. Blánaid White
| | Dr. Blánaid White is a lecturer in the School of Chemical Sciences. She received her PhD from DCU in 2005 and took up a postdoctoral research position in the University of Kansas. She returned to DCU as an IRCSET postdoctoral researcher in the Sensors and Separations research group.
Blánaid's research interests are in the application of analytical separation and detection techniques for the investigation of biochemical processes, particularly initiation and propagation of oxidative stress leading to aging.

Treasurer: Dr. Britta Stordal
| | Dr. Britta Stordal is a researcher in the National Institute for Cellular Biotechnology (NICB) at Dublin City University. She received her PhD from the University of Sydney, Australia in 2007. She took up a postdoctoral fellowship at the NICB in 2008, funded by a Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowship from the European Union FP7 programme.
Britta's research interests are examining the molecular mechanisms of drug resistance to chemotherapy in cancer cells.

Ordinary Member: Dr. Sinéad Loughran
| | Dr. Sinéad Loughran received her B.Sc in Biotechnology from the School of Biotechnology in DCU in 2002 and her Ph.D. from the Molecular Virology Group in 2007. During her time as a postgraduate researcher she was Chairperson of the Biological Research Society, DCU. She is a researcher in the National Centre for Sensor Research/School of Biotechnology under the direction of Dr. Dermot Walls and her main research focus is in identifying the role and mechanisms of molecular changes that lead to enhanced cell survival during Epstein-Barr virus infection and related cancers. Sinéad also teaches on several science courses for the Faculty of Science and Health at DCU.

Ordinary Member: Dr. Carol Lynam
| | Dr. Carol Lynam is a researcher at the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute/School of Biotechnology. She received her PhD from DCU in 2002.
After a short post-doctoral position at the National Centre for Sensor Research (DCU) she worked as a Research Fellow in the Intelligent Polymer Research Institute at the University of Wollongong, Australia. With the support of a Marie Curie Reintegration Grant she returned to DCU in 2008 to take up her current position. Her research interests include functionalisation of organic conductors such as carbon nanotubes and conducting polymers for applications including sensors, energy storage and also in the area of bionics.

Ordinary Member: Colm McAtamney
| | Colm
McAtamney received his B.Sc. (Hons) in Physics and Biology from National University of
Ireland, Maynooth in 1996. In the same year he started his MS.c. with the Optical
Sensors laboratory in the School of Physical Sciences at Dublin City University under
the supervision of Prof. Brian MacCraith. He was awarded his MSc. In 1999. Colm then
worked with an Irish start-up company NTERA as a research scientist with research
interests in the design, build and optical characterisation of novel paper-like display
technologies from 2000 till 2003. In 2003 he joined the National Centre for Laser
Applications (NUIG) as a Research Engineer specialising in laser materials processing.
In 2006 Colm rejoined the Optical Sensors Laboratory as a project manager. Since the
start of 2008 he has worked in the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute as an Integration
Manager.

Ordinary Member/Webmaster: Dr. Sara Morrissey
| | Dr. Sara Morrissey is a post-doctoral researcher in the Centre for Next Generation Localistaion (CNGL), School of Computing. Following an undgraduate in Applied Computational Linguistics at DCU (BSc. Hons. 2004), she received her PhD from DCU in 2008 with a thesis on Data-driven Machine Translation for Sign Languages. Her current post-doc research extends machine translation work on minority languages in the medical domain, including sign langauges. Sara is also the post-doc and contract researcher representative in the School of Computing and sits at School Meetings and School Research Committee meetings.

Ordinary Member: Dr. Pádraig Murphy
| | Pádraig Murphy is a Research Fellow in the School of Communications at Dublin City University (DCU). He has a BSc in Environmental Pollution and Biological Sciences, from University of Glamorgan and an MSc in Science Communication jointly from DCU/Queen's University Belfast. Padraig did his PhD in Communication Studies at Dublin City University. His research interests include science communication, public participation in science and technology issues and emerging technologies in education. He has developed public engagement programs for schools on science and society issues, particularly controversial areas around new technologies. His current postdoctoral research, funded by the Environmental Protection Agency STRIVE program, focuses on public consultation models for nanotechnologies and public responses to the social, health and environmental implications of these new technologies. Pádraig also teaches on science communication and multimedia courses at graduate and postgraduate level at DCU.
